How to reach Tarapith and other significant places

Way to Tarapith Temple or Tarapur Village at the Temple of Maa Tara

This well known temple of Ugra Tara or Maa Tara of Tarapith, is situated in Tarapur Village in Rampurhat block of Birbhum District in West Bengal, India

The best way is to reach here is through Rampurhat Railway Station, which is approximately 220 Km from Sealdah or Howrah Railway Station in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal and also one of the Metros of India. Another route to come here is via Barddhaman Railway Station, 120km from this place. From Rampurhat Railway Station, one has to make a journey by different road transports like Autos, Buses, Cabs, and so on, which are available 24 hours from Rampurhat Railway Station. Tarapith temple is at a distance of 7 Km from Rampurhat Railway Station, and the nearest Airport is Kolkata.

This place is also well connected with different cities of West Bengal by road network. State Highway no. 13 is the nearest Highway to this temple. One can find more about route direction through the map given below.

Rampurhat also lies close to Bolpur (Shantiniketan, famous for Vishvabharati University, and home to Rabindra Nath Tagore), Barddhaman, Malda towns in West Bengal. All these places are well connected with Rampurhat by rail and road network.

Places of Interest in Chandipur or Tarapith

Temple of Maa Tara : This present temple was built by "Jagannath Roy" of Malharpur (name of the village near Rarapith) about 200 years back, when a powerful flood in Dwarka River demolished the original temple built by Joy Dutta. Jagannath Roy was also a grate devotee of Goddess. One night, Goddess Tara appeared in his dreams and informed him about a storage of wealth kept hidden in the jungle. Goddess suggested that he should use the wealth to build up the current temple building. At that time, the financial condition of common people was not good, people are very poor, no one had enough money to build a new temple. Divine and transcendental appearance of the Goddess Tara in the temple can be found in her Royal Attire.

Tarapith Temple, East Direction

Sila Murti of Maa Tara:

Still, there is an age old stone statue of Goddess, famous as the name "Sila-Murti of Maa Tara", its seeing abstract. In this Sila Murti or stone statue, she feeding breast milk to infant Lord Shiva. She appears in this from, when she asked Maharshi Vasistha, "In which look you want to see me? As of your's choice of look, I appeared in front of you and to the world, because you are the first person who worship me. Firstly she appears as a lightning star or tara to Vasistha, then, as a request of Vasistha, she appears in the look of Jagat-Janani or mother or everyone in Universe. After her look of, in which she feeding infant Shiva, her breast milk turn into stone and this statue lies hidden under the royal-attire. As the order of Goddess its make hidden. After 9 P.M. Indian Standard Time, its showing to all.

Chandrachur Bhairavh :

Where the Goddess Adhya-Shakti is present in her different forms, Lord Shiva would also be present there along with her as Bhairavh. Here in Tarapith Lord Shiva appears in the aspect of Chandrachur Bhairavh. His temple is also to the east side of Goddess Temple. There are temples of the supreme lord Vishnu, Hanuman and Bama Khyapa respectively in the Temple premises.

Atla :

Birth Place of grate Mad-Saint "Bama Khyapa". He is also well known as son of Goddess Tara for her miracles, It's 3 km from Tarapith Bus stand. You can reached easily by rickshaws and autos.

Maha-Shamshan :

A place near the Temple, where dead bodies are burnt, cremated and buried. The place of burial of the Shiva sage sect is quite far from that of the Vaishnava sage sect. According to Hindu Iconography, sages are not burnt after death, the dead body of sages are burred in holy places or flow in any holy river. Pancha-Mundi Asan of Vashishtha Muni, Samadhi mandir of Bama Khyapa, Pad-Padma* foot prints of Goddess in a form of stone are situated together to the east of Maha-Shamshan. Samadhi mandir* (tomb stone) of several other sages can also be found in this Maha-Shamshan.

Tara Pada Padma Tarapith Maha-Samshan

Pada Padma of Goddess and Pancha-Mundi Assan in Maha-Shamshan :

In Tarapith Maha-Shamshan, Stone Foot Print or Sila Pada Padma of Goddess Tara and Pancha-Mundi Assan made by Maharshi Vasistha is highly divine and significant. Maharshi Vasistha, made this Pancha-Mundi Assan or seat made by skulls of a human being, black snake, elephant, owl, monkey, as guided by Lord Buddha and with sit on this he got the boon and blessing of Goddess. This holy seat is used by various yogi or spiritual performer for spiritual practice, finally Bama-Khyapa left his body, while sitting on this Assan and merge with Goddess or got Salvation. While meditation on this Pancha-Mundi Assan, a abstract dancing foot always disturbed Mahashi Vasistha. He was able to know that she is Goddess and wants to test him, whether he is influenced by any dancing lady or not, by his supernatural power. As blessing, Goddess herself make this stone foot print for Vasistha to worship.

Munda Malani Tala :

After Maharshi Vasistha come back from Tibet, as advised from Buddha, he found the place where is the river Dwarka is flowing in north direction. He started spiritual practice according as advised by Buddha. Once, a doubt grew in the mind of Maharishi Vasistha, whether Goddess Tara is present in this place or not? He want to know the actual situation and he started to find out such things to conform, that whether goddess is present in there or not! During this searching, he went through a place where, he see a garland of divine human skulls is placed, which called as Maha-Shankha Mala or Munda-Mala. He urge to know, whom was that garland and he starts meditate to know more by her third sense. During meditation what he is seeing, Goddess Ugra Tara put her garland of human skull or Munda-Mala at there and bathing in Dwarka river. Then after this place is famous as Munda Malani Tala and he come back to pancha-mundi assana, sit and started his spiritual practice again.

Jivita Kunda :

In front of the temple there is a pond which is called Jivita kunda ; in older times, all the supernatural miracles took place here, ghost and spirits roam across this pond and do miricales. At last Goddess give all the supernatural power of this kunda or pond to Bama-Khyapa.
